skateboard park
does anyone know the status of the skateboard park and all the money that was raised? Who is in charge now? Are they still doing it?
POSTED: 2005-04-20
we haven't done much work on it since last summer but i'm pretty sure we are going to start working at it pretty hard once school is out. everyone is too busy during the school year.

School is out now. What is being done? I haven't heard of anything. If nothing is going to be done what is planned for all of the money people donated?.

A skateboard park is a nice idea and I
hope that whoever started the project passed it on to another that will continue
to make this a reality. With a skateboard park alot of work must come first. Planning
of what kind of park you want, where to put
it to please everyone, permits and legal
phases such as insurance. Now add the cost
of a contractor, materials, maintainence,
lighting and much more. A skateboard park is
not built overnight, but it doesn't mean
its not forgotten. Hang in there!.

School is about to start again. What progress was made on the skateboard park over the summer? A lot of people donated a lot of money and I think an update would be nice. .

It would be nice to know what is going on with this project. If the people who donated the money to this project are left in the dark it hurts other people who are out fundraising for other causes because they haven't seen any results. If more money is needed then more fundraising should be done. Where is the money?.

I think this project should get going again. You see kids all over town trying to find a place to ride and repeatedly getting asked or told to leave. They just want to do their "Thing" just like any other kid whose is involved w/basketball, soccer, baseball etc..

I say put portable ramps into the All Purpose Building. Out of the elements,
lighted, you'd know where your kids are
and they could be supervised. This building
is also centrally located which is sure to
become an issue on an outdoor skating
facility..

I am glad to see that the work has started but I am some what confused now about the design. Every skatepark I have seen or been to is below ground level and then worked upwards. This one seems to be just flat. Anyone out there know of the design plan/.

What a waste of money!!! I havent seen a single kid on that slab yet. This is exactly what will kill this community. Enough people wine about it to get it built and then nobody uses it. Fell sorry for the guy that donated 25G's. His grandson suckered him..

It is not complete yet, give it a little time. This is being built by mostly volunteers. They will be working on it through the winter..

Just to clear a few things up...a skatepark is not gonna "kill" the community. I don't know exactly what you meant by that, but if you're talking financial stuff, a lot of it is going to come from grants and donations. Not to mention money that was raised by everybody involved (including myself) with hiline grind. About the way it's going to be set up, the kids were asked what they wanted and that's what they're getting. There was an actual meeting at the court house (trust me I was there) with city council members, fair board members, kids, and parents. This was open to anyone. As to the comment about the kid suckering his grandpa, that's a little unnecessary. What do you care about how he spends his money anyway? I don't skate anymore, but I used to and was involved with raising money and stuff back when we started, so I can appreciate the donation he made, and any donation made, and all the support that there still is for the project. It's nice to see that there's still some there, especially like that. So basically, this park is what the kids want, it's not hurting anything, there's been a lot of time/work put in, and the money is there. What's wrong with that? .

Just wondering who is in charge of the skatepark? There doesn't appear to be any design...look on www.grindline.com and see what Wolf Point is together. I have seen alot of parks but none like this. Earlier this week I thought it may be the pool they have been discussing..

We really need to have a meeting. It's summer now so we should be getting ramps and boxes and all the other stuff for the Slab. Also, a drain needs to be installed. When it rained, the entire thing was soaked for days. The water just sitting there is cracking the concrete. Plus if water just sits there it will ruin the base of all the ramps. We really want to skate there but can't..

The problem with this project as with most in this community is people with no clue start it up and think they know it all. Clearly they did not look at other communities to see what they had done. A slab of cement out side with wood ramps in Glasgow...that's GENIUS! That's not even a skate park or a decent attempt at putting one together. Bozeman has a great bike/skate park...all concrete w/little too no maintenance in a park. Not a slab of concrete next to the hiway in a parking lot. Wolf Point even seems to be on the right track. A perfect example of how people in this town who shouldn't be heading things up do anyway and people in this town are either scared to rock the boat or don't care enough to say when something is really a stupid idea. I know I should stay more positive so I am gonna give it a try. Way to think it through!! Great Planning! Think of all the money you could have saved throwing some ramps in a parking lot...well if you can find a business owner who actually takes the time to put down some concrete...most are too lazy and cheap so DIRT/mud it is...anyway that's an other forum...Kudos to the skatepark team!!.

I think that the kids were skating in the lots around town, so someone thought if a slab was poured they would have a place. A skate park is much more that a slab. Thats like putting up a hot tub for the pool. Is this a community project or who is in charge of it?.

Who ever is in charge should be getting ahold of who ever did the cement work and demand that they redo it the right way so the water will run off of it!! If I was the one who donated all that money for the cement I would just be SICK..

Please go to www.myhometownhelper.com.
Then click on "Find a Project"
Then scroll down to the Glasgow Skateboard/BMX project.
Debbie Swanson, Exec. Director for Two Rivers applied for this $15,000 grant to be used for more equipment at the skateboard park (the first phase of equipment was just ordered this month).
The Betty Crocker Company will award grants to community projects with lots of community support - so please go to the website and post your comment in support of Glasgow's skate park so that we can get additional funding for ramps, pipes, etc!
Thaks!!!.

And leave a comment in support of the skate park to show the grant committee that Glasgow deserves their $15,000 grant!!!

I was sure hopeing the kids would have a skate park like the one in Billings. I feel alot of dissapointment with this one. As far as the water standing in the rink- well why can't the kids go out with a sqwegy or brooms and get rid of the water? They screwed up on not making the center above the rest so it would run off, but they can put a drain it, but the meantime why can't the kids that do use it help out?.

My kids and I would like to help out to make improvements to the skate park. I don't know who is in charge or who to contact but I have a fellow friend who would gladly install the rails if he knew who to contact to do so. He has four boys and I also have 2 boys and 2 girls who would like to use the park. Could whomever is involved please contact us so we can pitch in?
For the rest of the complainers, since you are so quick to cast judgment and make negative remarks, why don't you be the first ones to sign up and help make the needed changes to improve the park? I'm sure the help would be appreciated.
I have yet to see a skate park that has someone hired to supervise the people who choose to use them. Obviously the parks are a "use at your own risk" deal just like the rest of the parks in town. I would no sooner sue the city if my kid fell off the slide than I would if my kid fell off his skateboard.
People need to take responsibility for the actions of their children and stop trying to pass the blame off on someone else, not to mention frivolous lawsuits. If my son breaks his arm skateboarding, that's par for the course. I'm not going to blame whomever built a slab of concrete for my son getting injured. That's just stupid and the exact reason why insurance rates are so ridiculously high. I equate that with suing the paper company if my daughter gets a paper cut. Good grief!
People complain about the kids skateboarding around town. Now they have somewhere to skate. It's not the greatest, but it is something. Try being a part of the solution instead of sitting back and making complaints and allegations and pointing fingers at the few people left who actually care to take the time to do something for our youth.
Try being a part of the solution for once.

Brenda Anderson at the Valley County Treasurer's Office is the Treasurer.
Meetings are usually held at Flicks, and Ronnie Kulczyk (Flicks' Owner) is pretty involved with the committee.
I bet you could call one of them to figure out how to get involved! .

I think things for our kids to do are always a good idea. It helps keep them out of trouble. But, I think the kids utilizing these facilities should take a bigger part in them, other than just whining that they need something to do until they get it. I never see kids picking up around or doing work at the skatepark facility or other recreational facilities that are there for their benefit. Their parents do it most of the time, if it gets done. Working to get something started is the easy part. Keeping it going is the hard part especially if it was just a passing fad of someone who had an interest in it as long as their kids were. We're too small of a community to keep jumping from one thing to another at the whim of a few. .

Just a thought on how to get the skate park going... with the big reunion happening this summer the folks at Hi-Line Grind should make the project as visible as possible. Maybe even set aside a day for volunteers to stop by and help out. Might even be a good time to solicit donations if they are still needed.
I remember when Josh Wood was the only skater I knew in town. He built his own 1/4 and then 1/2 pipe in his driveway. That's the kind of passion and dedication that needs be here. Since graduation I've been involved in a few community projects and I always seem to see the people who helped work on the project as the ones who end up using it the most.
Here's a challenge for those who are wondering what's happening with this project..you all know who is building the sk8 park, so go find them and let them know you are willing to help. Find out how you can help. Don't just complain, bring a solution to the table.
I live on the East end of Hwy 2 (Boston) and would be happy to drive back to Glasgow to donate my time for this project.

Being that the temps reached 60 degrees, I saw many children walking and out and about. Among these children I saw a few skateboarders headed torwards the park. I looked as I drove by and it's covered in water.....so they were walking all the way there to be dissapointed. Our community has been pushing to present the community children with options and with 'productive' things to do. Isn't there a board or something that can take care of maintenance? Quite a bit of money was donated to this project and raised- can we not take care of it so that it can be used?
*Dissapointed that those children were dissapointed..

I had nothing to do with this project nor have any idea about this kind of recreation.
